Ich surfe jetzt schon seit mehr als 40 Jahren. Mein Vater, selbst von Berufswegen leidenschaftlicher Segler, führte mich als kleines Kind an das kühle Nass heran, natürlich zunächst zum Segeln. Mit 12 Jahren wechselte ich dann aber doch zum Brettsegeln, wie es in der DDR hieß. 1983 dann meine erste erfolgreiche Teilnahme an einer Regatta. Zwischen 1985 bis 1989 immer platziert unter den Top Ten der DDR. Dann kam, wie wir alle wissen, der Mauerfall und alles wurde anders.

I have been surfing for more than 40 years now. My father, himself a passionate sailor by profession, introduced me to the cool water as a small child, first to sailing, of course. At the age of 12, however, I switched to board sailing, as it was called in the GDR. Then in 1983 my first successful participation in a regatta. Between 1985 and 1989 always placed among the top ten in the GDR. Then came, as we all know, the fall of the wall and everything changed.

Zwischen 1990 und 1992 windsurfte ich noch in der Surfbundesliga, was ich dann aber 1993 einstellte. 2005 dann noch einmal ein Wettrennen gegen die Scandlines Fähre von Dänemark nach Rostock mit meinem Kumpel Tom Eisele. Es folgten der Betrieb einer Surfschule, eines Shops und eines Internethandels. 

 

Between 1990 and 1992 I still windsurfed in the Surfbundesliga, which I then stopped in 1993. Then in 2005 again a race against the Scandlines ferry from Denmark to Rostock with my buddy Tom Eisele. This was followed by the operation of a surf school, a store and an internet business.​

Jetzt nutze ich all meine Erfahrungen, um Pepe zu coachen. Ich denke mal, in zwei bis drei Jahren wird er mein Können in den Schatten stellen. Es macht mir großen Spaß, mit ihm auf dem Wasser zu sein. Natürlich auch mit dem Rest meiner Familie, meine Frau und meine vier anderen Jungs lieben das Wasser zum Glück genauso.

Now I'm using all my experience to coach Pepe. I think in two to three years he will outshine my skills. It's great fun for me to be on the water with him. Of course also with the rest of my family, my wife and my four other boys love the water just as much, fortunately.

Ich werde oft gefragt, welches mein Lieblingsspot auf der Welt ist. Ich weiß es nicht, jeder Spot hat seinen eigenen Spirit, welchen man nicht missen mag. Ich mag es in Südafrika zu windsurfen, finde das Wasser aber zu eisig. Ich finde Mauritius toll, mag aber auch Maui, Hawaii. Die Kanaren sind ein prima Starkwind und Jumprevier, ich hasse allerdings die rollenden Steine, an welchen ich mir ständig die Zehen einhaue. Sao Miguel de Gostoso ist schön warm und nicht zu busy, allerdings solltest du hier auch deinen Kite im Gepäck haben, da der Wind ab und an nicht zum Windsurfen reicht. Auch Deutschland hat viele tolle Spots, 1990 lernte ich auf die harte Tour in Kägsdorf an der Ostsee, was es heißt, in der Welle zu surfen. Es war mein erster Kontakt mit der Welle und ich mußte viel schwimmen und laufen. Kanada BC bietet tolle Wellenspots mit riesen Wellen in der Wintersaison , aber das Wasser ist leider auch eiskalt. So nun zu einer Region, wo ich sagen muß, dass diese schon nahezu perfekte Bedingungen durch die Vielfältigkeit der Spots an seiner Küste bietet: Andalusien in Spanien! Hier findet man von Cabo Pino am Mittelmeer, über Tarifa am Atlantik, bis hin zu Caneos de Meca, das ganze Jahr über sehr gut funktionierende Spots. Letztens waren wir in Mexico, Baja California in La Ventana und ja, es war sehr schön und sehr winding, ich hatte vorher noch an keinem Surfspot 70 Tage hintereinander Wind! La Ventana ist, das neue Tarifa für uns.

I am often asked which is my favorite spot in the world. I don't know, every spot has its own spirit, which you don't want to miss. I like windsurfing in South Africa, but find the water too icy. I like Mauritius, but I also like Maui, Hawaii. The Canary Islands are a great strong wind and jumping area, but I hate the rolling rocks that I keep hitting my toes on. Sao Miguel de Gostoso is nice and warm and not too busy, but you should have your kite in your luggage, because the wind is sometimes not enough for windsurfing. Germany also has a lot of great spots, in 1990 I learned the hard way in Kägsdorf at the Baltic Sea what it means to surf in the wave. It was my first contact with the wave and I had to swim and run a lot. Canada BC offers great wave spots with huge waves in the winter season , but unfortunately the water is also freezing cold. So now to a region where I must say that it already offers almost perfect conditions due to the diversity of spots on its coast: Andalusia in Spain! Here you find from Cabo Pino at the Mediterranean Sea, over Tarifa at the Atlantic Ocean, up to Caneos de Meca, the whole year over very well working spots. The other day we were in Mexico, Baja California in La Ventana and yes, it was very nice and very windy, I never had wind at any surf spot for 70 days in a row before! La Ventana is the new Tarifa for us.

Die Welt bietet uns viele tolle Plätze, welche wir auf der Jagd nach guten Wellen besurfen können! Seit ein paar Jahren bin ich auch oft Segeln, so Überquerte ich 2021 mit Pepe auf unserem 46feet Catamaran Ka Nur den Atlantic von La Rochelle aus, passierten den Panama Kanal und segelten dann weiter bis zu unseren neuen Heimat Canada BC. Das war ein großartiges Erlebnis für uns beide! Wir benötigten 4 Monate für diese Strecke da leider auch unvorhergesehen Dinge geschahen. Videos davon sind auf Youtube Sailing Ka Nui zu finden.

 

The world offers us many great places, which we can surf on the hunt for good waves! For a few years I have also been sailing often, so in 2021 I crossed with Pepe on our 46feet Catamaran Ka Nur the Atlantic from La Rochelle, passed the Panama Canal and then sailed on to our new home Canada BC. This was a great experience for both of us! It took us 4 months to complete this route as unfortunately unforeseen things happened. Videos of this can be found on Youtube Sailing Ka Nui.

Was mir in dem Zusammenhang persönlich sehr wichtig ist, bitte benutzt alle weniger Plastik, verzichtet beim Einkaufen auf Plastiktüten, es schwimmt schon zu viel davon in unseren Meeren. Recycelt euern Müll, helft bei Beachcleanups und animiert andere dazu, damit wir alle noch viele schöne Momente auf dem Wasser erleben!

Was ich hier auf Tahiti gerade gesehen habe das dicke Makkaronis als Strohhalm benutzt werden, find ich super und funktioniert auch!

What is very important to me personally in this context, please all use less plastic, do without plastic bags when shopping, there is already too much of it floating in our oceans. Recycle your trash, help with beach cleanups and encourage others to do so, so that we can all experience many more beautiful moments on the water!

What I have just seen here in Tahiti that thick macaronis are used as a straw, great idea!
